Dodo Code Specific Etiquette:

Always make sure you read the individual island rules when traveling to someone else's island! On dodocodes.com, island rules are displayed underneath where the code is listed. Users will often also have certain parameters set in their descriptions, such as, an entrance fee or “turnip runs only.”

Turnips

When it comes to turnips, island owners will often allow people to come to their island, but only want people buying or selling turnips. This is so more people can come then leave the island quickly. If you are looking to visit an island to meander around, do not go to an island set up for turnip runs, unless the island owner has stated it’s okay in their dodo code description.

Shops

When looking to shop on another user’s island, you should also always confirm with the island owner that it is okay. There are certain items in the Nook Shop that can only be purchased by one person, and the owner may have been waiting to purchase it themselves.

Flowers/Fruit

If a code in the code section is marked with “Don’t mess with my flowers,” don’t touch the flowers! Do not run on or pick flowers on that island. This is also customary when it comes to shaking trees/taking fruit. Always ask if it’s okay if you are unsure!

Entrance fee

If an island is marked with an entrance fee, this means you will need to provide the island owner with either bells, NMT (Nook Miles Tickets), or specific items before being able to venture onto the island past the entrance. Do not down rate other players simply because they require an entry fee on their island.

When to Report/Downvote a Dodo Code

If you see a code with any inappropriate content in the description, immediately downvote and report it via #report-users on the dodocodes Discord.

If you are on another person’s island and see inappropriate chat content, you should do a few things: First, report the player directly to Nintendo (you can do this by pressing the minus button on your controller.) Second, take screenshots or video of the conversation and send it to #report-users on the dodocodes Discord.

If you are having trouble getting into an island due to communication interference, do not downvote the code or leave a negative rating on their profile. It is not the code owner’s fault that you are unable to get in.

Abbreviations:

Players will often have abbreviations including T1L1, LF, and FT in their code descriptions.

T1L1 (Take One, Leave One):

This means a users is hosting a trading event. You may come to the island and pick up something, but you must set something else down in its place. Island owners may determine what kind of items are allowed in their T1L1's (furniture, clothing, etc.)

LF (Looking For):

Users often use "LF" to show they are looking for a specific item, villagers, special NPC, etc.

FT (For Trade):

Users often use "FT" to show they have a specific item(s) up for trade.

Example statements: "LF star fragments, 10 NMT FT."

Other Information to Note:

Do not leave your unwanted items scattered around other people’s islands without permission! Other players may view this as you leaving “trash” and then they have to spend time picking your items up to get their island clean again. If you want to drop something, ask for the island owner’s permission first. Rather than littering your unwanted items, sell them at the Nook Shop.

Don’t forget to rate the island owner after your visit! This is a great way to say thanks to someone who let you visit their island.

Auction Specific Etiquette:

The 24 Hour Waiting Rule

When it comes to auctions, please remember people have busy lives, and there are players using the site from all over the world. However, if an auction owner or winner has not contacted you within a maximum of 24 hours after a win, note the following:

Spam Bidding

Constantly bidding on an auction that no one else is bidding on is not permitted. Doing so creates a negative experience for the auction owner. Continuing to spam bid after receiving a warning will result in a ban.

If you are an auction owner and are experiencing an issue, please send a message to #report-users on the dodocodes Discord.

Saying “Thank You”

Remember to say thanks to the auction owner/winner after a trade has been completed! You’ve both gotten something you wanted. Don’t forget to give them a rating to let other players know, and to boost both their and your reputation!

Note: Forms of currency accepted with Auctions are currently Nook Miles Tickets, and Bells. Any other form of currency used could result in your auctions being removed, and a possible warn

Giveaway Specific Etiquette:

The 24 Hour Waiting Rule

When it comes to giveaways, please remember people have busy lives, and there are players using the site from all over the world. However, if an giveaway owner or winner has not contacted you within a maximum of 24 hours after a win, note the following:

Saying “Thank You”

If you’ve won a giveaway, please remember that you are not only receiving free items, but another player has taken time out of their day to give them to you. After receiving your giveaway winnings, remember to say thanks and give them a rating!

Chat Specific Etiquette:

Unsolicited Messages

It's okay to politely reach out to users via chat to ask to trade or catalogue, but understand that people often have busy lives and live in different time-zones. Other users are under no obligation to trade, let you catalogue, or let you visit their island unprecedented. Leaving a bad rating because another player did not answer an unsolicited message from you will get you a warning from moderators, and potentially a ban depending on the contents of the rating. Note that if someone did not answer your message the first time, do not continue to message them. Name-calling and other derogatory remarks are not permitted on dodocodes.com.

However, if you politely messaged a player and they ended up helping you out, never forget to say thank you and leave a rating! Your politeness and kindness means more than you may realize to the people in this community.

Ratings Etiquette

If you visited someone’s island via dodo code, completed an auction transaction, have been delivered giveaway items, etc. don’t forget to leave the person a rating!

Ratings are not only a good way to say thank you to someone, but it also improves their reputation and yours!

Please as a reminder, only rate a user based on your experience with them, and not their island/items/outfits etc.

Voting Etiquette

Here you can see recent data of the dodo codes website. You can find nearly 1.5k custom designs and 1k dreams; and more than 94.5k dodo codes have been posted as of now! In the Custom Design section only 2.4 % of the visitors leave a like. More than double the visitors of Dream Codes give a thumbs-up (5.8 %), and out of all Dodo Codes visitors, only 11.2 % leave a thumbs-up.

What does that mean?

Taken these three categories together, it means that out of 25 people only 2 leave feedback. For Custom Designs alone it's only 1 person in 50!

Why should I vote/give feedback?

Members of our community took time and effort to provide you with fun events on their islands, give you access to their islands through dream codes and to give you free access to awesome designs. Additionally, you receive reputation points for voting, as well as owner of the code too, so it's a win-win situation! :)

Saying “Thank you”

There are several ways of thanking someone for their effort. If you visited a dream or island or saw a design you like, you can either leave reactions, leave a vote or leave a respectful comment. While comments and reactions are highly appreciated, votes determine the ranking of dreams and designs on the website. Votes are also very important for Dodo Codes, as they tell you if people enjoyed the experience or not!

At this point, please be reminded again, that connection errors can occur and that it's often not the hosts fault, that something went wrong, so connection difficulties are not a good reason to down-vote a Dodo Code.

The Reputation System

You might have seen the small black icon on your profile displaying your reputation. You can collect reputation points by being active on the website. As in real life you will gain more reputation when being active on the website and giving your feedback.  Let's take a closer look at the system.

Gaining Reputation

As you can see, you get mutually rewarded by leaving ratings, comments, reactions, up-votes and follows! If you don't like to write comments, but still want to give feedback, use votes and reactions as a way of appreciation for the member providing the entertainment for you.  You can react 3x per minute to Dodo Codes, Designs, Dreams, Auctions and Giveaways, which will show your appreciation and will earn both members 3 points per minute. Additionally, reputation points can be earned by posting Dodo Codes, Designs, Dreams, Auctions and Giveaways. While just following every member you come across will also give you a lot of reputation, remember that you will be notified whenever they post a new Auction, Giveaway, Dodo Code, Design or Dream!

Losing Reputation

Be aware that you will lose a lot of reputation by ending auctions and giveaways prematurely and by removing your own bids from auctions. Consider this when receiving/making an offer from/to another member of our community. You and the other member will also lose reputation, when you unfollow them or remove a reaction from their Auction, Giveaway, Design, Dream or Dodo Code. Another way of losing reputation is by receiving a thumbs-down on your Dodo Code.

Note: Attempting to extort the reputation system will result in either a warning or ban.

Our take-home message: With mutual respect to mutual benefit. While we are a virtual community, we are all people behind our usernames. So please treat others with the same respect and kindness that you want to be treated with in real-life. Thank you.
